Human causes refer to errors on behalf of staff on board a plane, or even sometimes the passengers. Sabotage from rivals, aircraft hijackings, terrorist attacks and more can occur on a flight, potentially putting everyone at risk. However, up to 50 percent of these crashes fall to pilot error. Other potential sources include air traffic controllers and dispatchers, who may fail to perform their tasks efficiently enough to avoid damage.
Mechanical causes often refer to the failure of parts of a plane. Human error such as a failure to properly inspect or replace equipment can lend to this phenomenon. Collapse of systems within the aircraft, improperly done repairs, engine breakdown and malfunction of crucial features in a plane can all contribute to mechanical failure. This form of error makes up for 20 percent of crashes.
Finally, there is weather, one of the leading causes of aviation crashes. Snow, fog and storms all contribute to plane crashes via lack of visibility or even physical damage done to a plane. It is one of the least controllable elements in a flight, which pilots must acknowledge to remain safe.
